The Visionary’s Exponential Path: A Slower Start with Much Greater Impact

The Visionary’s Path vs. The Conventional Path.

A faculty member asks me, “Why isn’t my research panning out yet?”
A nonprofit executive wonders, “Maybe systems just can’t be changed this way.”
A physician says, “Was I wrong to believe patients deserve more?”
An attorney asks, “Is it even possible to reform our justice system?”

After years working with disruptors in healthcare, higher education, K–12, the environment, and law, I recognize this moment instantly. I see the same arc again and again: The Visionary’s path—a slower, harder, exponential road I’ve explained to countless clients.

This is for Visionaries: people willing to challenge systems, reshape fields, build new institutions, and lead differently. One thing is clear: the Visionary’s path is harder—but it produces legacy-level impact. And we need that now more than ever.

The Stages of the Visionary’s Path

1. The Departure
It begins with a pit in your stomach—or a pull you can’t ignore. You know you can’t keep doing things the old way. This moment is charged with purpose, conviction, and resolve. You step away from what’s familiar toward something riskier—and far more promising.

2. The Spurt
Everything feels new. Ideas multiply. Systems, mindsets, constructs, and approaches take shape. The vision is alive, expansive, and intoxicating. Possibility is everywhere.

3. The Risk Zone
Progress slows. New-takes-time. Doubt creeps in. You compare yourself to peers on the conventional track who are making steady, incremental gains. Imposter syndrome takes hold:
Who am I to do this differently? Do I really have what it takes? Maybe convention exists for a reason.
The outside world doesn’t quite understand your work—yet. You struggle to fit a vocabulary that fits what you’re building.

This is the danger zone. It’s also where support matters most. A strategic thought partner or executive coach can steady your leadership, sharpen your clarity, close skill gaps, and help you resist burnout or retreat to convention.

4. The Glimmer
Then it happens: a win. Recognition. A breakthrough insight. Validation from someone you respect. You glimpse the extraordinary.
Maybe I’m onto something. Maybe this could be big.

5. Exponential Progress
Momentum builds. Your different way of working starts to deliver outsized results. The field takes notice. Wins compound. You feel aligned, grounded, and unmistakably in your purpose. The hard path proves itself worth it.

This is the Visionary’s journey. Harder, yes—but capable of changing everything.
